Hello, Escapees.

As one of the new guys around these parts, I figured I should introduce myself a little, so as to avoid questions like, “Hey, who’s that guy?” and “Hey, what is that guy doing here?” and “Hey, I don’t know that guy.”

My name is Scott Crisp, and I’m a writer and a stand-up comic living here in Dallas. I’m fascinated by confusing music videos, pop history and the two Golden Ages of professional wrestling (c.1989-c.1994, c.1996-c.2001). Ty Griffin and I met while working as mercenaries, attempting to track down the South American drug lords that kidnapped my daughter, Alyssa Milano.

Okay, that was a lie based on the plot of the movie “Commando.” Ty and I met at a party or something.

Anyway, I’ll be writing here on the ETO blog from time to time. Sometimes, I’ll break down an old music video, sometimes I’ll dish out unsolicited advice to no one in particular and sometimes I’ll just rant semi-coherently about this or that. For example: Pitbull. He totally sucks.

Cheers,

Scott

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to set a world record? Now, you can turn those thoughts into reality! This Thanksgiving, the Dallas YMCA and Capital One Bank are teaming up with Guinness World Records to get the Dallas Turkey Trot’s name in the books for the largest gathering of people dressed as turkeys. Come celebrate Thanksgiving the Dallas way with Tommy the Turkey and 40,000 people in setting a world record at this year’s Dallas Turkey Trot! All you have to do is show up in a turkey costume to race and to take part in the record-setting fun. Come on out to this amazing event for Dallas, and show how you are escaping the ordinary by being a part of a world record!

Here’s the full information on the history of the Dallas Turkey Trot from their facebook page:

The original Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot was held at the Old Fairgrounds back in the early 1940s, but the long string of consecutive years began with the eight mile race back in 1968.

The unique eight mile distance was created when the one hundred and seven participants were instructed to run along the shores of White Rock Lake “to the big oak tree and back”. By 1979, the race had become so popular that it was moved to the downtown area to accommodate more runners and to showcase “Big D”.

The 3 mile Fun Run/Walk was added in 1984 to accommodate the increased participation of individuals and families. In 2009 the distance was changed to 5K and the course was certified.

The Capital One Bank Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot is a YMCA tradition that draws people from all over the country each year. Even if you’re not a runner or walker, there are fun activities for the whole family to enjoy: clowns, pony rides, bounce houses, live musical entertainment and much more!

There has been a surge of shoegaze driven progressive rock over the past few years, and a great representation of this is the ethereal, aggressive and beautiful sounds of Boston’s InAeona. Since the release of their Blue Sky All Day EP in 2010, they have been generating buzz for their unique brand of rock that has been described as “somewhere between Tool and M83.” Now, InAeona has embarked on another national tour, this time in support of the recently recorded split 7″ with Seattle’s He Whose Ox Is Gored. The guys answered some questions about the formation of the band, their favorite bands that they have worked with, and more.

How did InAeona form as a band?

We’ve been working together for sometime in various projects and good friends for even longer. Eventually we came together and decided to really make a go of it. We’ve only been this band for two years and we’ve got 3 tours, and a few releases under our belt. Musically we’ve always been on the same page – striving to create something that truly represents what we would want to hear out of a band. I won’t try to describe what that is with words because I’d rather just let people have a listen and make their own judgement.

James, I know that you’re a producer and have a studio. Tell me about your favorite experiences with that and some of your favorite bands you’ve worked with.

Well, I’m obviously biased. My favorite stuff is always with my own band because it allows for complete artistic freedom. However, my favorite experience as a hired gun has to have been producing Junius‘ latest full length, Reports From The Threshold Of Death. It was 2 solid months of 10 hr days and it was truly rewarding. Those guys work as hard as any band out there, and we’ve been close friends for years now.

You just released your Split single. Is there a full-length album in the making?

There is always a record in the making. We’re constantly writing and working on new material. So yes, there are plans to release a full length this coming year, as well as more touring.

What are some other bands that you’re listening to that would recommend to ETO readers?

Always listening to Mew – I can’t recommend that band enough. And we’re really not metal heads, but Katatonia has been in regular rotation in the van.

Is there a chance that InAeona might be coming through Texas the near future?

Absolutely! We’ll actually be there on Wednesday 11/9 at the Beauty Bar. We’re really excited to be back there to see all the friendly faces. We’re hoping to get something booked for SXSW. It’s very competitive so we’ll see if something shakes out.

InAeona is:

James – Drums

PILE sign with new label Exploding In Sound Records

Entering the studio in the spring to record their highly anticipated follow up to last year’s Magic Isn’t Real.

Exploding In Sound Records is beyond thrilled to announce that the first band signed to the freshly launched label is none other than Boston favorites PILE. The label will release the band’s next album on vinyl, CD, and digital formats in the summer of 2012.

One of the absolute best bands in the North East, PILE have made a name for themselves with a persistent touring schedule and their inherent ability to turn the uninitiated into diehard fans. Combining equal parts crushing post-punk, brilliant pop melodies, and a soaring fusion of early 90’s grunge, indie, and swampy blues, PILE’s sound is immediately accessible and impossibly catchy. Through abrasive guitars, enveloping bass riffs, intricate stampeding drums and triumphant vocals that range from woozy mumble to infectious howl, the band create a magnificent noise that simply can’t be ignored. Rising from the impeccable Boston basement scene that has flourished over the past few years, PILE are the kind of band that will appeal to everyone from hardcore punks to elitist indie kids, and everyone in between with their diabolically loose complexity and feverish charm.

Formed in 2007 as a solo project by frontman/guitarist Rick Maguire, Pile released the raw “Demonstration” a lo-fi recording showcasing Maguire’s knack for songwriting. “Jerk Routine” followed in 2009, an eclectic album once again written and performed by Maguire. That summer found PILE expanding to a trio, as drummer Kris Kuss and bassist Matt Becker became the band’s dynamic rhythm section. In the fall of 2010, the band self-released “Magic Isn’t Real,” a genuine masterpiece that has inspired a growing obsession in the band all across the country. Shortly after the release of the record, Becker left the band to focus on his growing family, while Matt Connery was brought in as the band’s new permanent bassist. Ready to make an impact, they did just that and hit the road, organizing their own tours resulting in over 100 shows in the past year to ecstatic and rowdy audiences across the country! This fall saw the release of the “Big Web Seven Inch” single, comprised of three tracks recorded during the “Magic Isn’t Real” sessions. Head over to the band’s official Bandcamp page where you can stream and download all of the band’s music. While Boston will also be home, the band is eager to hit the road and expand their rapidly growing audience.

“I honestly couldn’t think of another band in the world I’d rather have as the premiere Exploding In Sound Records artist. As a label there are certain qualities you look for in a band, and PILE possess every last one of them. Aside from my uncontrollable obsession with their music, the band’s dedication and easy going nature is truly something special. I believe in PILE, and look forward to working with them,” said Exploding In Sound Records creator Dan Goldin.

The southern California rockers in Silver Snakes have been fine tuning their sound for a while in other bands and are here with their new album, Pictures of a Floating World. With bands like HUM, Quicksand, Cave-In, and more as some of their major influences, it’s obvious that Silver Snakes is a band that’s here to stay. Their frontman, Alex Estrada, answered some questions about the new album, their west coast tour, and provided the whole back story on how Silver Snakes formed as a band. They were also kind enough to let Escaping The Ordinary do an exclusive audio stream of their song, Dear Midnight, in the audio player below.

ETO: I know that all of you have played in different bands previously. How did Silver Snakes come together as a band?

Alex Estrada: Silver Snakes was something i had on the sidelines for years while i was playing in other bands. Daniel and i were in a band called Cathedrals and we knew Justin through the local punk/hardcore scene while he played in a band called Death Art. I met Mike through friends while he was really busy with his old band Dear Life. Cathedrals started to slow down and Daniel started to play drums for Horse the band. I had a lot of time to work on other projects so i started putting more focus on this band. Eventually Cathedrals called it quits, i made a few calls and we had our first practice almost exactly one year ago. It all just sort of came together after that. We immediately started writing for a full length. Our first show was in February and we locked ourselves in the studio 3 months later.

ETO: You guys just embarked on your west coast tour. Tell me about some of the other bands on the bill.

AE: Well we are doing this tour on our own, It’s just under 2 weeks and we are playing with a handful of different bands in each town. I’ve been doing my best to reach out to the cities and i’ve found a lot of cool kids and bands that we will hopefully be meeting! There is definitely some mixed bills on this tour which we are super stoked on. We are playing with Devotion in Tacoma, WA which should be awesome. I’m pretty excited about our show in Boise because of the response so far. San Francisco is also one we are looking forward to since we will be playing with some old friends.

ETO: What’s the story behind your new album, “Pictures In A Floating World”?

AE: I see it as a collection of thoughts and situations. Lyrically, The record deals a lot with personal insights on the different paths that people choose in life. I focused on 10 specific situations and the artwork was designed to reflect them. The recording process took place at several different studios with the help of some really good friends. It was engineered by Roger Camero (No Motiv) and produced by Steve Choi (Rx Bandits). They definitely understood what we were going for and didn’t cut any corners when it came down to making it happen. Siren Records approached us about releasing the record and now it’s time to tour and get it out there. We are really happy with the way it all turned out.

ETO: Do you have any advice for new bands out there?

AE: Keep at it. We set a lot of deadlines for this band as far as our first show, demo, record, tour etc and i feel like it was a huge help. Make sure everyone is on the same page and stay motivated. I’m not expecting this tour to be perfect, i’m sure a show will fall through, maybe we’ll get a flat, someones feelings will get hurt or whatever but thats just how it goes. Do your best to avoid a sense of entitlement. No one owes anything to anyone when it comes down to music. We are trying to make a lot of things happen within our first year of being a band but i want to make sure that we do all the hard work that comes along with that.
